So you’ve heard about being an Au Pair, but don’t quite know what to make of it. Have no fear, here we outline 10 reasons why you should consider taking the plunge and being an Au Pair abroad!
1. The Money
While your actual living allowance or salary won’t be terribly high, the main perk of being an Au Pair is that you get free room and board every day, meaning that you’ll only really have to spend money on your days off.
As a result, being an Au Pair is a great option if you want to see the world but don’t have all the money in the world!
2. Cultural Immersion
Being an Au Pair allows you a unique opportunity to experience a side of the country the ordinary traveler won’t experience.
By living with and interacting with a local family, you’ll have numerous opportunities to explore the local area and interact with other locals and get to see the real side of the country that you’re in.
3. Learn a new language
Knowing another language is an invaluable trait when it comes to finding a job in the future.
As companies increasingly aim their eyes towards the foreign market, the need for employees who can speak more than one language is greater than ever.
4. Make friends
In addition to the Host Family, you’ll be able to interact with other Au Pairs who are doing the same thing you are.
You all have already chosen to travel abroad in a unique way so that chances that you’ll get along are pretty high!
5. A Home away from Home
By having a host family and house ready for you when you arrive, being an Au Pair is a much more stable option that traveling to a country with nothing pre-arranged.
As you interact with the family and the child, you’ll find that you forge a connection that will make it all feel like it’s a home away from home.
6. Boost Your Resume
In today’s increasingly international job market, there’s nothing that makes a CV stand out like professional experience abroad.
It shows prospective employers that you’re independent, can adapt to ever-changing situations, and aren’t afraid of taking chances.
7. No Housework
Especially in China, one of the greatest benefits is the fact that your sole responsibility will be for the education of the child.
As opposed to other countries, you are not expected to do any kind of housework, which will typically fall under the responsibility of the households Ayi, or maid.
Chances are that when you Au Pair abroad, you’ll be going it solo.
Heading to an unfamiliar place on your own forces you to step outside of your comfort zone and interact with others in order to make new friends and successfully intern and live outside of your home country.
9. Travel with the family
In addition to your regular days off during the week, the family will often invite you to come along for various family vacations.
These are basically expenses paid trips around the country that you are in, and are great ways to travel for essentially free!
10. Make a difference
While pow-wowing around the world care-free certainly has it’s benefits, being an Au Pair is a unique way in which you can see different parts of the world and simultaneously make a positive contribution to society by teaching your Host Family’s child English.
Travel, and make a difference at the same time!
