Many of the Beijing hospitals have made a name for themselves by offering all treatments under the same roof. Besides, the hospitals in Beijing also attract a good number of medical tourists from the neighbouring countries.

Traditional Chinese Medicine – (“TCM”) is an integral part of Chinese culture. TCM theories originated thousands of years ago through meticulous observation of nature, the cosmos and the human body.  With a history of 2000 to 3000 years, it has formed a unique system to diagnose and cure illness. Scientific research and clinic experiments in TCM are continuously progressing.

The TCM approach is fundamentally different from that of Western medicine. TCM is well recognized for its remarkable effectiveness in offsetting the side effect caused by the toxic and chemical treatment of cancer cases in the western medical system. TCM has been very effective in the treatment of diseases such as cardio-cerebrovascular, immunogenic, tumours, bone fracture etc.

Treatment is not based only on the symptoms, but differentiation of syndromes. Therefore, those with an identical disease may be treated in different ways, and on the other hand, different diseases may result in the same syndrome and are treated in similar ways.

The clinical diagnosis and treatment in TCM are mainly based on the yin-yang and five elements theories. TCM practices include Chinese medication, radial artery pulse (pulse diagnosis), pharmacology/herbalogy, massage and Qigong. With acupuncture, in which the practitioner inserts fine needles into specific points on the patient’s body, the treatment is accomplished by stimulating certain areas of the external body.

The attitude towards traditional Chinese medicine and pharmacy across the world is changing; Westerners have started to appreciate the value of TCM. A large number of specialists in TCM have been invited by countries in Asia, Europe, America and others to give lectures on TCM or to conduct activities in TCM therapy and scientific research. In China, amongst the foreign students in natural sciences, most major in traditional Chinese medicine.
