Semester Abroad: Living In An Exciting City Called Beijing!| 3 min read

Temple of Heaven

My name is Matheus Menezes from Brazil and I’m a Business major. There’re a lot of reasons why I decided to come to China.  Five years ago, while doing my study abroad in America, I lived with a Chinese guy for an entire year. He introduced me to the Chinese culture and I just felt in love with it.

After I lived with him, going to China became a dream for me. I wanted to learn the language, try the food, visit historical sites, and learn more about the Chinese culture. Now, thanks to ImmerQi, my dream has become a reality. I’m currently doing my study abroad at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Tsinghua is considered to be one of the best Universities in the world. The current president of China, Xi Jinping is an alumnus as well as the previous president, Hu Jintao. Studying abroad in Beijing has a lot of perks. It’s impossible to be bored in this city. The public transportation in Beijing is great. You can go anywhere by subway, bus, and train. The nightlife is also pretty good. In Beijing, you’re able to experience not only the Chinese culinary but also the Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and other countries’ culinary. On Tsinghua campus, the food is very affordable and good.  There are more than 12 canteens.

Overall my experience at Tsinghua University has been great. Since day one I have been having a fantastic time. Before the beginning of the semester at Tsinghua, ImmerQi staff took my roommates and I on a five-day orientation. During these five days, we visited the Great Wall, the Olympic park and we went to different Chinese restaurants and districts in Beijing. These five days were great to get us familiarized with everything. Our apartment has a great localization. It’s very close to everything. It takes less than 10 minutes by bicycle to arrive on campus. Everything that you need you can find on campus: grocery stores, banks, hospital and many other things. You can never be bored on campus. I always try to play basketball when I can. It is a great way to make friends. I also go to the gym on campus at least three times a week. At Tsinghua you have the opportunity to meet a lot people from all over the world and learn about their culture.

There are so many clubs and organizations that you can join. This is another great way to meet people. I signed up for the flag football team club and also for the hiking club. I also signed up for the buddy program. Through this program I had the opportunity to meet a native student that has been helping me to get more familiarized with the campus and the city. During the 7-day national holiday, he took me and my roommate to a nearby city called Tianjin It was a really fun trip. He also has been helping a lot with my Chinese.

Thanks to ImmerQi, I’m having the opportunity to boost my mandarin while taking classes for my major at one of the top universities in the world. This will definitely boost my career. If you have the opportunity to come to China one day, do not hesitate, you’ll have a great experience and the ImmerQi staff will take great care of you.
